Madison police welcome donated armored vehicle

Updated:
MADISON -

The Madison Police Department has a 20 ton addition to its arsenal.

The department received a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protection vehicle, or MRAP, this week from the Defense Logistics Agency. The government surplus program provides equipment to local police departments at no cost.

Sgt. Ben McKay tells The Madison Courier that the department had been on a waitlist for an armored vehicle for several months but had expected an armored Hummer.

The MRAP is about 13 feet tall and can seat six people. The doors each weigh 700 pounds.

McKay says the vehicle will be used in barricade or active-shooter situations.
