Police in western Indiana are warning about a scam where someone will call someone and say they are holding a loved one hostage and demand large sums of money.
Montgomery County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Davis tells the Journal Review in Crawfordsville it's the type of scam he sees nearly every week.
Montgomery County 911 dispatchers received just such a call on Friday, when a hysterical elderly woman from Darlington says she got a call from a man who said he was holder her son captive. But the dispatcher called the son's workplace and found out he was there and safe.
Davis says people who believe they are being scammed should keep asking questions, because frequently the caller will just hang up.
