WEST LAFAYETTE, IN -

Purdue president Mitch Daniels is the talk of twitter in Indiana because of a special appearance during halftime of the Notre Dame-Purdue game in West Lafayette.

The Purdue "All American" Marching Band spelled out Mitch on the field. And the former governor rode out on his Harley - right into the middle of the performance.

One fan tweeted that his appearance "might be the most boss thing ever."

Thousands of fans arrived in town Saturday to see the big game - many traveling via a new $46 million bypass.

The four-lane limited access road,  U.S. 231 bypass, around West Lafayette opened on Friday after 2 years of construction.  Daniels says the the new bypass will make campus safer and more vibrant.

The Journal & Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/15YyeKN ) the road opened Friday after a ribbon cutting earlier that marked the end to decades of planning and two years of construction.

The road was financed through Major Moves, the project Daniels championed as governor to lease the Indiana Toll Road for $3.8 billion and use the proceeds for road projects across the state.

Mayor John Dennis says the bypass allow truck traffic to move outside city limits and will bring economic development.
