Buddhist monks creating Franklin College artwork

Updated:
FRANKLIN, IN -

A group of Buddhist monks from Tibet is creating a sacred sand mandala at Franklin College as part of a cultural exchange organized by the school.

The monks are spending six days tapping colored sand into an intricate design that will serve as a symbol of unity, hope and peace.

They also will perform stories from Tibetan folklore and play traditional instruments.

The Daily Journal reports this is the second Franklin College visit for the monks. A group visited for a week in 2011. A sand mandala they created is displayed in the college's Neapolitan Student Center.

A mandala depicts the holy images of the Buddhist religion. The monks slowly tap bits of sand onto a raised platform, eventually creating a unique design.
