Residents fighting IU's plan for fraternity move

Some people living near the Indiana University campus in Bloomington are upset with plans to demolish six houses near their neighborhood to make room for a new large fraternity house.

University officials plan to tear down the IU-owned properties a couple blocks north of the Memorial Union in a land swap with the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. That group is giving up its current house next the Maurer School of Law building.

The Herald-Times reports more than a dozen people spoke against the plan during Wednesday's Bloomington City Council meeting. The council can't stop the demolition, but residents argue that a large fraternity house doesn't fit the character of the University Courts Historic District.

IU officials say the university's master plan calls for a residential building at the site.
