Victims of fatal Middletown car crash identified

Two people killed in a crash near Middletown Tuesday evening have been identified.

Henry County Sheriff Butch Baker says the crash happened on Mechanicsburg Road at County Road 825 North, which is just west of Middletown. Police arrived at the scene to find two cars in a field near the intersection.

Clifton Shane Thompson of Middletown and Caroline Bateman of Pendleton, who were in the same vehicle at the time of the crash, were pronounced dead at the scene. The car's other occupants, Cheyanna Ball of Markleville and Isaiah Stone of Anderson were taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Anderson, then to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of their injuries. Stone was listed in critical condition when he was transported.

Thompson and Ball were ejected from the vehicle in the crash. Ball suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, Leandra Penn, suffered a broken right leg and a fractured arm in the crash. She was taken to Ball Hospital in Muncie.

Blood samples were taken from both drivers and investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology tests as they continue their investigation into the crash.
