Schools cancel outdoor activities amid record heat

BEECH GROVE -

Some central Indiana schools have canceled outdoor activities amid hot weather that saw Indianapolis reach a record high of 96.

The Beech Grove City Schools in an Indianapolis enclave and the Mount Vernon Community School Corp. east of the capital canceled all outdoor sports practices because of concerns over the heat. The Beech Grove schools also called off an indoor volleyball game because of inadequate ventilation at the venue.

North Central High School postponed boys' tennis matches with Canterbury and Carmel, as well as their JV boys' soccer game. The varsity soccer game was pushed back to 7 p.m. to avoid the heat.

Fishers also pushed back the start time of their boys' soccer game scheduled for Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service said the high of 96 recorded at Indianapolis on Tuesday afternoon broke the previous record high for the date of 95 last reached in 1983.
