LOUISVILLE, KY -

The Louisville mayor's office says the metro area that includes southern Indiana has regained about 42,000 jobs that were lost during the economic slowdown.

Mayor Greg Fischer says in a statement that the resurgence of the Ford auto plants and GE Appliance Park have given the city a boost.

The Louisville Metropolitan statistical area recorded 627,500 nonfarm jobs in July. The figures come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and it includes four counties in southern Indiana. The low was 584,600 jobs in February 2010.

The mayor's office says manufacturing has been Louisville's biggest growth engine since the recession. In the last three years, manufacturing has added 14,100 jobs in the metro area.
