Americans might be sharing more personal information online than ever through social networking sites and email. But they also want to protect who gets access to that data and think they should be given better control of it.
A study released Thursday by the Pew Research Center says privacy concerns among Americans are on the rise, with half saying they are worried about their personal data online. That number is up from 33 percent in 2009.
Meanwhile, 86 percent say they have tried at least one tactic to hide their activity online, such as deleting their browsing history.
Internet users cite various reasons for wanting to avoid detection. About a third said they wanted to conceal their activity from hackers, while 28 percent wanted to block advertisers.
