Nearly century-old Evansville organ on move

Updated:
EVANSVILLE -

A deteriorating organ with some 5,000 pipes is being removed from Evansville's old downtown coliseum in hopes of getting a new life.

Workers from the University of Evansville and the American Guild of Organists expect they'll need a week to take apart the organ that was installed in 1919 at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum. The organ has gone unused for about 50 years and parts of it have been damaged from burst water lines and roof leaks.

University chaplain Tammy Gieselman tells the Evansville Courier & Press that school officials are working on plans to expand its chapel and incorporate the rebuilt Tinker Memorial Organ.

Vanderburgh County officials have said they can't afford the estimated $1.5 million cost to restore the organ.
