INDIANAPOLIS -

It's been the talk of the town this construction season.  The South Split construction project is desperately needed because of oversized loads that continue to hit the Virginia Avenue overpass.

With the barricades in place on Tuesday, September 3rd,  I-65 between the North and the South Splits will be closed for about two months.  Not everything In the area will be closed.

Commuters will still be able to get to North, Michigan, New York, and Ohio Streets from  Westbound 70.  For afternoon travelers trying to get out of town, the Pine Street ramp for Northbound 65 will remain open.  Travelers south of the South Split will be able to use the on and off ramps to and from Morris Street.

Get the full overview of the project here.

Closures

There are, however, heavily traveled ramps that will be shut down.  The on and off ramps to and from Washington Street will be closed. The Calvary Street and Virginia Avenue on-ramps will also be shut down.  The East Street exit ramp will also be closed.

Alternate routes

Interstate 465 will get extra use as the detour.  Motorists can divert in either direction on 465 to and from I-70 by using 465 around the south side.

Additionally, travelers can still come from the east side on Westbound 70 and continue north to Meridian and West Streets.  West Street on the west side of downtown may get a workout between I70 to the south and I70 to the north.

There are incentives if the crews wrap up the project early.

Follow WTHR on Twitter and use the hashtag #SurviveTheSplit to let us know your successful alternate routes, or any problems you run into.  Watch Eyewitness News Sunrise starting at 4:30 am for the latest traffic updates!
