SW Indiana churches appeal cross display ruling

Updated:
EVANSVILLE -

A group of churches that want to erect 6-foot tall crosses on Evansville's public riverfront is appealing a federal judge's order banning the display.

The churches, led by West Side Christian Church, filed a notice of appeal Wednesday with the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.

Attorney Christopher Wischer says the appeal will challenge the scope of the federal judge's July ruling barring the display. He tells the Evansville Courier & Press the churches believe "the district court injunction was in error."

A decision in the case isn't expected for several months.

Evansville's Board of Public Works approved the cross display in June. But two Evansville residents represented by the ACLU of Indiana challenged it on the grounds it would represent a government sponsorship of religion.
