Feds' budget cuts start to impact senior services

Updated:
LAFAYETTE -

The federal government's across-the board spending cuts are starting to have an impact on some of the services used by Indiana's senior citizens.

A van service used by many older residents in the Lafayette area called Care-A-Van has three vehicles which serve seniors in Lafayette, but those vans will stop service Friday because of the automatic federal spending cuts.

The service is one more victim of the cuts that began in March and have been slowly accumulating.

The Journal & Courier reports that Indiana's Area IV Agency on Aging and Community Action Programs are receiving $362,000 less during the July through September period.

A $288,000 state grant will offset cuts to programs such as home-delivered meals, transportation and group meals, but local officials say more funding is needed.
