INDIANAPOLIS -

Heroin is becoming the drug of choice here in Indianapolis.

Police have seen a steady increase in heroin-related activity across the city in the past year.
The public safety director, Troy Riggs, says it's becoming similar to the popularity of crack cocaine in the 1990's. He says heroin is coming into Indianapolis from Mexico and Chicago.

Riggs thinks the introduction of heroin into the city is due in part to the state's crackdown on meth and illegal access to prescription drugs.

The drug isn't limited to young people.  Heroin users are also found in middle and upper classes.
