Southern Indiana officials are working to resurrect a former riverboat-themed celebration to coincide with the 100th birthday of the Belle of Louisville.
A five-day festival next year will mark the Belle's anniversary, and seven other riverboats are expected to travel 10,000 nautical miles to join the event. Now Jeffersonville officials want to revive their own festival to tap into the celebration.
Local officials tell the News and Tribune an effort is underway to raise $1.5 million to host a Steamboat Days festival next year. Organizers already have collected more than $750,000.
Mayor Mike Moore says the festival was once a popular event but fell victim to dwindling crowds. It was canceled in 1999.
He says the revived festival will feature music, local booths and other entertainment.
