Drivers pass through Kokomo more quickly

Kokomo, IN -

Motorists traveling U.S. 31 through Kokomo are getting through the central Indiana city about a minute faster than a year ago.

A joint report published last week by the Indiana Department of Transportation traffic engineers and Purdue University researchers found that retiming 13 traffic signals along U.S. 31 in Kokomo allowed travelers to make it through the city on average in a little less than 12 minutes. Before the lights were retimed, it took a little less than 13 minutes, on average.

INDOT says the cost benefits were estimated to be about $2.7 million based on the Texas Transportation Institute values for commuter and commercial vehicles.

Much of U.S. 31 connecting Indianapolis and South Bend is a rural divided highway, but traffic slows as it passes through Kokomo.
