CLAY COUNTY -

A two-year-old child is the only survivor in an all-terrain vehicle crash that killed a woman and two small children, part of a increasing number of such accidents in Indiana this summer.

The two-year-old is in serious condition after the crash in Center Point in Clay County.

The investigation at this point is trying to determine just how fast the ATV was going down a rural Clay County road.

A mother of two young children, Terri Moore walked from her neighboring house to the scene of the accident Monday, clutching four roses. She placed them on the concrete embankment where the crash occurred.

"It was really a tough night. It happened in front of my home. I just wanted to honor the victims, especially the children," Moore said.

Three people died as a result of the crash. The driver, 22-year-old Andrea Allen, one-year-old Jaylen Rawls and two-year-old Nevaeh Dempsey. Two-year-old Xavier Rawls is listed in stable condition at Riley Hospital for Children-IU Health.

"It actually hit so hard that it split the concrete embankment," said Indiana Conservation Officer Christopher Springstun.

One look at the 1996 Polaris Sportsman 500 and you can tell it burst into flames on impact. The charred remains leave little to the imagination.

"This would be a single-seat-type ATV. The type you sit on that just has handlebars," Springstun said.

Springstun agreed that there were too many people on the ATV.

There had been reports of an ATV driving erratically in the area, so the question of alcohol needs to be addressed. Springstun says that will be determined by the autopsy, but "preliminary indications in the investigation point toward alcohol as being a factor."

That will be determined in the autopsy. Moore says it is not at all unusual to see a speeding ATV in rural Indiana.

"We all don't use the best of judgment. I am sure this lady had no intention of doing harm to anyone. Everyone makes errors in judgement," she said.

Monday afternoon, the coroner determined all three victims died of blunt force trauma injuries.

In 2012, there were 126 ATV accidents in the state of Indiana, resulting in 141 injuries and seven deaths. So far this year, there have been 140 accidents, resulting in 163 injuries and 12 deaths, including the crash this weekend in Center Point.
