INDIANAPOLIS -

Police say speed and alcohol contributed to a motorcycle crash that killed two people and shut down a portion of I-74 for several hours overnight.  The crash occurred at midnight along eastbound I-74 near the Franklin Road bridge.

Police tell Eyewitness News a man and woman were riding at high speed when they came up on a slower vehicle. It's believed they tried to brake, and when they did, they lost control of the motorcycle.

Police say both victims were thrown from the motorcycle and died in the roadway.

Police diverted traffic along eastbound I-74 while investigators were at the scene, collecting evidence.  Eastbound I-74 was shut down at I-465, but reopened shortly after 2:30 a.m.

Police have identified the victims as Devon P. Criswell, 41 and Jacquelynn M. Lewis, 23 both from Indianapolis.

Police say the motorcycle driver and passenger were not wearing helmets.
