Indiana State Police to provide technical help to Gary

Updated:
Gary, Indiana -

The mayor of Gary will not be receiving the major show of force she sought from state police to restore order to the troubled northwestern Indiana's streets, but Governor Mike Pence said troopers will provide technical assistance.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville and The Times of Munster report that Pence informed Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson on Thursday that state police technical assistance team would assess specific needs for the city over the next two to four weeks and make recommendations. Freeman-Wilson had asked Pence to send 60 state troopers to the city for 90 days.

Freeman-Wilson says she is happy Pence didn't simply reject her request, saying there is value in technical assistance. She also is seeking advice on other anti-violence approaches, including asking the Department of Justice.
