A source confirms that former Colts wide receiver Austin Collie has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Collie had been looking to return to the NFL after concussion problems and a serious knee injury ended his 2012 season after just one game and one catch.
Collie spent four seasons with the Colts from 2009-12. He caught 173 passes for 1,845 yards and 16 touchdowns. His best season was as a rookie in 2009. As a fourth round draft pick out of BYU, Collie caught 60 passes for 676 yards and 7 TD's from Peyton Manning and proved himself a valuable slot receiver.
But his concussion problems began in 2010 when he took two nasty hits while catching passes. The first came in Philadelphia on November 7, 2010. He missed the next five games. Collie returned December 19 against Jacksonville. But he took another hit to the helmet against the Jaguars, ending his season.
Collie has been working out in Indianapolis with St. Vincent Sports Performance in hopes of an NFL comeback. Collie worked out for the 49ers Thursday. The 49ers are thin at the receiver position due to injuries.
