The type of happiness you seek could be key to your overall health

What makes you happy? The type of happiness you seek could be key to your overall health.

Researchers at UCLA and the University of North Carolina did a groundbreaking study that looks at happiness and health.  They found that different types of happiness have different effects on the human genome.

People who have high levels of hedonic well-being — the type of happiness that comes from self gratification, like eating a piece of chocolate or buying a new car --had a similar physical response on a genetic level to people who are depressed or under stress.

While those who displayed eudaimonic happiness -- which comes from a sustained effort at working toward something larger than yourself, like donating your time or money -- had a better genetic response. That includes strong antiviral and antibody gene expression which can have an impact on your overall health and well being.
