New specialty plate form goes online Thursday

INDIANAPOLIS -

Indiana is ready to begin taking applications for its specialty license plate program that was revamped following a controversy over a gay youth group's specialty plate.

Bureau of Motor Vehicles general counsel Elizabeth Murphy told a legislative panel Tuesday the new application form will be posted Thursday on the agency's website. She says groups can submit applications between Thursday and April 1, 2014, but the first plates won't be issued until 2015.

Lawmakers passed a new law this year overhauling Indiana's specialty license plate system following a controversy over the Indiana Youth Group. The support group for gay teenagers had its plate revoked last year and is now suing the BMV.

Indiana's new law also requires all groups with the plates to sell at least 500 plates a year.
