Farmer's markets are becoming the local apothecary now that doctors are writing prescriptions for vegetables.

Two New York hospitals are the latest to join a national movement, allowing doctors to prescribe fruit and vegetables to patients who then exchange them for reduced cost produce at farmer's markets.

The patients must qualify financially, and also get nutrition counseling.

The prescription program is part of a organization called Wholesome Wave.

The program is expanding nationwide to 28 states , but the latest hospitals to join are Harlem Hospital and Lincoln Medical Center in New York.

Indiana is not yet participating, but you can learn more here.
