Purdue expert to address congressional panel

WEST LAFAYETTE -

The head of the Purdue University office that commercializes new technologies is set to testify before a congressional panel studying ways of moving more basic research into the marketplace.

Elizabeth Hart-Wells directs Purdue's Office of Technology and Commercialization. She's scheduled to testify Wednesday in Washington before Congress' research and technology subcommittee. That panel is looking at ways to improve technology transfer at the nation's universities, research institutes and national laboratories.

Hart-Wells will tell the subcommittee about Purdue's recent steps to help turn research discoveries into marketable products. Those include the school's decision this year to grant students full property rights to inventions they developed as part of their university work.

Hart-Wells says that discoveries that come through research "can and should lead to delivery" of new technologies.
