Ball State won't release review of divisive "intelligent design" course

Updated:
MUNCIE -

Ball State University officials say it doesn't have to release a faculty review of a professor's honors course on intelligent design that's been criticized by an atheist organization.

The review panel was formed after a lawyer for the Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to Ball State describing Eric Hedin's "Boundaries of Science" class as religion disguised a science. The syllabus says the course encourages independent thinking.

The Star Press and an intelligent design group filed open records requests seeking the report, but Ball State officials say open records laws don't compel its release. The state's public access counselor says it's up to the university's discretion.

Ball State has also hired another instructor who wrote a book saying that scientific evidence suggests the universe was designed.
