New equipment could speed up rescue efforts of IFD firefighters

INDIANAPOLIS -

Life-saving rescues will now be faster for firefighters in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Fire Department was training Tuesday with new battery-powered cutters and spreaders. The tools will allow firefighters to immediately start rescue efforts when they arrive at the scene of an accident.

Captain Chris Womock of the Indianapolis Fire Department explained the advantage of the new equipment.

"It takes us away from using a power generator unit, along with hydraulic hoses.  It is removing ourselves from being dependent on foreign fuel.  It makes it a quick application tool. We can start our rescues a lot sooner than we have been able to in the past," he said.

The equipment is also designed to cut through specialized metals found in newer model cars.
