An Indiana State Police trooper is recovering at IU-Health Methodist Hospital after a crash on I-70 westbound in Morgan County near the Little Point exit Sunday evening.

The accident happened around 7:00 p.m.

According to a State Police media release, First Sgt. Jon Watson was riding his motorcycle east on I-70, just west of State Road 39 near Monrovia when he collided with an SUV.

Watson has a bad injury to one of his legs, according to police. He suffered multiple fractures to his leg and severe abrasions.  But he is expected to make a full recovery.

"They were approaching a construction zone," said State Police Captain Dave Bursten. "Jon Watson and another officer were in the left lane. It was closing. The other vehicle was in the right lane and for some reason moved from the right lane to the left lane without signaling."

After the SUV struck Watson's motorcycle, it rolled several times as it went into the median.

The accident happened near the entrance to a construction zone where the signage indicated the left lane was closing approximately one mile ahead.

Watson has been with the motorcycle division since its inception about 15 years ago, according to State Police. We expect an update on how he's doing later this morning.

The driver of the black Suburban passed a sobriety test, but was cited. His name and information will be released as that information becomes available.
