Group reforests 67 acres, donates it to Montgomery County park

An environmental group says it has reforested 67 acres of western Indiana's Montgomery County and transferred the land to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to become part of Shades State Park.

The Indiana chapter Nature Conservancy said Thursday it planted more than 29,000 trees on the land with a donation from the Alcoa Foundation.

The 3,400-acre Shades State Park has numerous deep and rugged ravines along the south bank of Sugar Creek. It's located about 50 miles west of Indianapolis.

Nature Conservancy state director Mary McConnell says the Indiana chapter was formed more than 50 years ago to acquire and protect Pine Hills, a nature reserve that's part of Shades State Park.
