A Marine veteran from eastern Indiana is about to be honored 47 years after the fact for valor during the Vietnam War.
The Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal will be presented to Roger Kimble of Centerville during a July 13 ceremony in Richmond.
Kimble tells the Palladium-Item that he received a Purple Heart for wounds he received in the 1966 attack. But it wasn't until he ran into his unit's commanding officer three years ago at a reunion in San Diego that he learned he had been nominated for a valor award.
The commander helped get statements from others who saw Kimble rescue four Marines from a burning vehicle during the attack.
Kimble says he's very honored to be recognized after so much time.
