Indiana getting a handle on gun permit backlog

Updated:
MERRILLVILLE -

Indiana State Police are starting to get a handle on a big backlog in firearm license applications that followed last year's deadly Connecticut school shootings.

State Police saw a four-fold increase in firearm license applications after a 20-year-old gunman in Newtown, Connecticut, fatally shot and killed 20 children and six adult staff members in December.

The Post-Tribune reports that from December to June, the state processed 91,940 gun permit applications. That compares with the 62,934 applications the state processed during all of 2012.

State Police are required to issue or deny requests within 60 days, but the backlog pushed processing time to more than 110 days.

More than 45,000 permit applications are still pending. But State Police said the backlog should be eliminated within eight to 10 weeks.
