Mom admits to drinking before crash

INDIANAPOLIS -

If your Fourth of July celebrations include alcohol, make sure you have a designated driver. In the past 24 hours, Indianapolis Metro Police tell Eyewitness News they've made at least eight separate DUI-related arrests across Marion County.

One of IMPD's most recent investigations includes a mother who admitted to drinking prior to a head-on crash early Thursday morning while driving with her children.

Paramedics and firefighters escorted three children to an ambulance after a head-on collision at 48th and Kessler. Their mother's SUV collided with a car at around 6:30 am.

The noise from the impact sent Richard Curry Sr. rushing to his bedroom window "trying to in my mind to configure how the accident occurred and could not," he said.

Investigators are also trying to figure out what happened. The car involved, a Mitsubishi Galant, was seriously damaged. Although the front end was smashed in, the driver was not seriously hurt.

The SUV driven by the mother tipped onto its side. Police say the mother admitted to drinking two beers, something that concerns other drivers, especially Curry, who got to the crash scene first.

"Two or three beers is probably a standard response. But I think she probably had more," said Curry.

"Ask her how would she feel if somebody would have run into or over her kids because they were out here drinking," said Wynetta Childs, a nearby resident.

Curry says the children's father also showed up on the scene. He listened in as the father talked with emergency crews. At first, police advised him to attend to his children, but when they suspected he had been drinking alcohol too, paramedics took the children to the hospital for a thorough check-up as their mother went to Wishard for an alcohol blood test.
