State officials are warning Indiana homeowners and renters that their insurance may not cover damage from fireworks that are banned in their counties.
The Indiana Department of Insurance says many insurance policies have disclaimers for coverage caused by illegal acts committed by the insured person.
Damage to your own home caused by someone else's fireworks, however, may be covered.
Insurance Commissioner Stephen Robertson urges people to check their county's laws and their insurance coverage.
The National Fire Prevention Association says nearly 18,000 fires and 9,600 injuries were caused by fireworks in 2011.
