New Yorkers' new domain: '.nyc' gets initial OK

Updated:
NEW YORK -

New York City likes to think of itself as a domain like no other. Now it can boast as much on the web.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced Tuesday that the city has gotten initial approval for a ".nyc" domain. That would mean web addresses could end in ".nyc" instead of ".com" or ".org," for example.

It's one of dozens of new suffixes worldwide that have gotten preliminary approval this year from the agency in charge of online addresses. The list includes Istanbul, London and Paris, among other cities.

The agency is called the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers.

New York officials say registration for the new ".nyc" addresses should open late this year for city residents and entities with offices here.
