A 37-year-old man died in a shooting overnight in Fountain Square, and Indianapolis Metro Police say several children were in the apartment at the time.
As of noon on Friday, police were still searching for the shooter.
Officers were called to the USCO Community Home in the 1000 block of Hosbrook Street, north of the intersection of Shelby St. and Virginia Ave., just before 3:10 a.m. They found the victim shot dead.
Police also found eight children inside the apartment, including the victim's ten-year-old son. The other children ranged in age from toddlers to young teenagers. Detectives are working to determine if the children witnessed the shooting.
One witness stated hearing a disturbance and subsequent gunshot from an apartment, according to IMPD spokesman Chris Wilburn.
Family arrived to pick up the children as police searched for the killer and as neighbors found out about the shooting.
Keiona Cissell, who lives next door, was anxious. "You're in the house and you are hearing on the news that the killer is still on the loose and it was kids involved. I live by myself so I am really nervous. It's sad. I am sorry to hear about the kids and all that they were in there. Wow. It's terrible," she said.
Police plan to release the fathers name who was killed once all of his family is notified about what happened.
Police have not released the victim's name, pending notification to his family. But a man who identified himself as the victim's brother told Eyewitness News at the scene that victim had just enrolled in college at age 37.
