FISHERS -

Just in time for the 4th of July, there's a new fireworks law that gives people certain days and times they can celebrate.

Set off a Roman candle or firecrackers outside of the designated times in Fishers and you could be looking at a fine of $150 the first time and $250 for any time after that.

"We're hoping that this ordinance avoids the injuries, the fires, the noise disturbance," said Fishers Police Ofc. Tom Weger.

Not every night can be the 4th of July, though. That's why Fishers has set up certain dates and times people can celebrate.

On July 4th itself, people can set off fireworks from 10 a.m. until midnight. From June 29-July 3 and July 5-9, fireworks can only be used from 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset.

The new law doesn't apply to sparklers, ground spinners, snakes, or anything that burns on the ground. It covers fireworks that shoot in the air, or anything on the ground that makes noise, like firecrackers.

"They're allowed to do it at those times and they can set off as many fireworks as they want, as long as they do it in a reasonable manner and hopefully with supervision so that nothing gets out of control," said Fishers Police Department Patrolman Cesar Rodriguez.

So far, police have received 21 complaints from people reporting neighbors setting off fireworks already. Police haven't written any tickets yet, only warnings.

"We encourage people to call. Let us know if there's any issues going on, because the last thing you want is for some of those fireworks to fall on your roof or fall on top of your house," said Rodriguez.

The new law does not cover fireworks displays put on by organizations or groups of people who have applied for a permit for the display.
