Fort Wayne nurse hopes new law will help others

FORT WAYNE -

A northeastern Indiana nurse is hoping her battle against breast cancer will help others with the disease through a new state law that takes effect Monday.

Carrie Barcus faced two years of weight loss and constantly being tired before being diagnosed with breast cancer because she has dense breast tissue. The Journal Gazette reports the law she helped inspire requires health providers to ensure coverage of certain services for women with dense breast tissue and will require the medical licensing board to adopt rules establishing an education program and standards for annual screening for women with high breast density.

Although she underwent a double mastectomy nearly three years ago at age 41, Barcus says she has been told she has a 75 percent chance of her cancer returning.
