Mayor Ballard vetoes officer plan

Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Mayor Greg Ballard has vetoed a City-County Council plan to put 100 new police officers on the streets. But the mayor says a plan he already has in place will move 100 existing officers from administrative positions back into patrol.

In a statement sent to the council, Mayor Ballard said he vetoed their plan because the funding was unsustainable that would have left the city unable to pay for the officers and equipment in the future.

The mayor says he has a team in place to look into transitioning officers from internal roles back into patrol roles; opportunities to return sworn officers back to patrol "by utilizing civilians when appropriate," and also the size and scope of future recruit classes.

According to Ballard, the team will announce its recommendations in July.
