Connersville mayor says city near deal on empty plant

CONNERSVILLE -

An eastern Indiana city's mayor says it is close on a deal for a company to take over a large empty factory and possibly bring "a lot of jobs."

The Connersville factory has been vacant since auto parts maker Visteon closed in 2007 and was where Carbon Motors had planned to build high-tech police cars until its plans fell apart last year after failing to obtain a $310 million federal loan.

Mayor Leonard Urban tells the Connersville News-Examiner that city officials are working to finalize an agreement with a company he declined to name. The city council and redevelopment commission are scheduled to meet Monday evening to possible take action on the agreement.

Connersville's Fayette County had the state's highest unemployment rate at 11.4 percent in April.
