Will Gordon, of Davidson, N.C., fired a 4-under-par 67 for a 36-total of 135, propelling him alone atop the leaderboard by one stroke Wednesday in the 2013 Western Junior at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis.
Gordon, who tied for 8th last week at the 2013 Southern Junior Championship, holed out for eagle with a gap wedge from 115 yards on the 424-yard, par-4 fifth hole, giving him renewed confidence as he moved forward in his second round.
"I hit it solid, and it landed about six feet behind the hole. But then I saw it starting to roll back," Gordon said. "I thought it had a chance to go in, and then I saw it disappear. It made me really happy, and that made the day a little bit easier."
Chase Hanna, of Leawood, Kan., who led the field by three strokes at the start of the day, finished his second round with a 2-over-par 73. Heading into Thursday's third round, he trails Gordon by a stroke.
"I just have to go out tomorrow and make some more putts," Hanna said. "I'm hitting it well enough to easily shoot under par just about every round out here. I just need to be more consistent. Made a ton of birdies yesterday and really didn't make that many today."
Tied with Hanna in second place with 36-hole totals of 136 are Donald Qiu, of San Diego, Calif., and Collin Morikawa, of La Canada Flintridge, Calif. Morikawa was one of five players on the day to tally a 67. Tied in fith at 138 were: Cheng Jin, of Singapore; Matthew Scobie, of Ajax, Canada; and the field's top-ranked junior Austin Connelly, of Irving, Texas.
Dylan Meyer of Evansville is the lowest-scoring Hoosier through two rounds. He is tied for 13th at one-under par. Jacob Brown of Carmel and Colin Proctor of Anderson are tied for 43rd at three-over par.
The field will be cut to the top 70 players and ties for the final two rounds, with Thursday's tee times starting at 7 a.m. off both tees.
