Interim IPS superintendent proposes plan to cut $10M from budget

INDIANAPOLIS -

The interim superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools proposed her recommendations to trim the district's budget shortfall at a meeting Tuesday night.

Dr. Peggy Hinckley introduced a plan to cut up to $10 million from the district's budget next year. Her plan includes saving $3 million by cutting 35 district-level positions. The proposal would also save more than $800,000 by combining worker responsibilities.

Thirty-four secondary teachers would be cut by the plan, which also calls for adding 25 elementary teachers and eight vice principals for elementary schools.

Hinckley says the cuts are designed to focus money on needs inside the classroom.

The school board takes action on the possible cuts next Tuesday.
