State cites SW Ind. company over worker's death

EVANSVILLE -

State regulators have cited a southwestern Indiana company for several violations involving the March suffocation death of one of its workers.

Forty-three-year-old Nugene S. Pike of Evansville died March 6 at Purina Animal Nutrition's Evansville facility. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says Pike became trapped and suffocated in a vertical conveyor belt with steps and platforms workers use to move between floors.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports a safety order issued by the state cites the company for several violations involving that lift, and proposes fines of $21,000.

Purina Animal Nutrition is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Minnesota-based Land O' Lakes, Inc.

Land O'Lakes spokeswoman Rebecca Lentz says the company has requested an informal conference with state officials because it does not agree with parts of the order.
