Ball State University has appointed a review panel to investigate allegations that an honors course exploring the nature of the universe is religion disguised as science.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation spurred the review with a letter it sent last month to Ball State President Jo Ann Gora urging her to investigate "disturbing reports of a Ball State professor proselytizing in the classroom."
School spokeswoman Joan Todd tells The Star Press the university takes the foundation's concerns "very seriously" but is also committed to due process for Eric Hedin, an assistant professor of physics.
Hedin teaches an honors class called "Boundaries of Science" that the Freedom From Religion Foundation maintains teaches creationism rather than science.
Todd says a panel of four faculty members will evaluate the course.
