Andrew Shaw scored on a deflection in triple overtime to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins in a riveting Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals on Wednesday.
Michael Roszival shot the puck from the right point into traffic. It deflected off Dave Bolland and Shaw before slipping past Tuukka Rask.
That came after Jaromir Jagr nearly won it for Boston in the closing seconds of the second OT when the puck deflected off him and hit the post, preserving the tie.
Boston's Kaspars Daugavins had a huge opportunity midway through the third overtime but his backhand shot in the crease went wide after Johnny Oduya got a stick on him.
Corey Crawford bested Tuukka Rask in the stat that really counts.
The Blackhawks goalie was outstanding in overtime - all three periods of it - keeping his teammates in the game long enough to finally overcome Boston 4-3 in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals on Wednesday night. He smothered a 2-on-1 breakaway in the first OT, frustrated David Krejci time and again and had so many nice glove saves baseball players could learn a thing or two.
Crawford made 51 saves. Rask, who came into the finals with the highest save percentage (.943) of the playoffs and a scoreless streak of more than 126 minutes, finished with 59.
Mistakes, bounces doom Bruins
Key mistakes by his teammates late in regulation and one wild deflection at the end were simply too much for Tuukka Rask to overcome.
Now, the Boston Bruins trail the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals. Don't blame the goalie for that.
Rask did his part, but the Bruins fell 4-3 in triple overtime in a riveting Game 1 that ended with the puck deflecting off Chicago's Andrew Shaw and into the net for the winner.
It was a fitting conclusion to a game that saw the Bruins blow a two-goal lead late in regulation through no fault of Rask's.
