KOKOMO -

Work is under way on extending a nearly 40-mile-long pedestrian and biking trail in northern Indiana, although planners say it could take a couple years to finish.

The extension will bring the Nickel Plate Trail into Kokomo with an overpass taking the new U.S. 31 bypass over the former railroad line. The trail now runs from the nearby community of Cassville north through Peru to Rochester.

City engineer Carey Stranahan tells the Kokomo Tribune that design work has started for a pedestrian bridge that will take the trail over the current U.S. 31. Completion of that span is expected in 2015.

Plans are for the Nickel Plate Trail to link up with a current trail in Kokomo.
