SULLIVAN -

A western Indiana police chief is cautioning drivers not to try to beat freight trains after a freight train collided with an SUV, killing a 16-year-old boy and leaving two other youths hospitalized.

Sullivan Police Chief Jesse Morin says the crash late Friday "is a great tragedy for the community" about 80 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

Morin says a witness told officers the railroad crossing lights were flashing and the train whistle was blowing when the SUV initially slowed down and stopped briefly, then tried to cross the tracks.

Police say the teen killed was the front-seat passenger. The 17-year-old driver and a 15-year-old back seat passenger, both males, were being treated at an Indianapolis hospital. The 15-year-old was thrown from the vehicle.
