Bloomington racer's death shows sports risks

BLOOMINGTON, IN -

The death of a 22-year-old racer last weekend at a Bloomington speedway is reminding others of the sport's risks.

Josh Burton died after a tire on his car came off and the vehicle rolled and was struck by another vehicle.

The Herald-Times reports his death was the first at the Bloomington Speedway since September 1978. Mike Waltz flipped his sprint car that year on the first turn during qualifying.

Burton's father has reassured other drivers that the odds of accident like the one that killed his son are low.

Speedway general manager Kris Kirchner says cars have safety equipment and that it's hard to know why Burton died.
