PENDLETON -

Three people were arrested on trafficking charges at the Pendleton Correctional Facility.

Prison officials say Markeeta Shaffer, Deuandrae Evans and a juvenile suspect were seen throwing packages over the fence into the offender recreation area. The packages contained 19 cell phones, 60 grams of marijuana and seven ounces of tobacco. The items had an estimated prison value of $20,000.

The suspects are facing preliminary charges of trafficking with an offender a controlled substance, trafficking with an offender a cell phone, possession of more than 30 grams of marijuana - all felonies - and a count of misdemeanor trafficking with an offender.

"The vigilance of Internal Affairs Staff and cooperation of surrounding law enforcement allowed us to stop this contraband from coming in as well as apprehending those responsible for attempting to traffic it," said Superintendent Wendy Knight.

Shaffer and Evans were taken to the Madison County Jail, while the juvenile was released to the custody of his parents.

The police departments of Pendleton and Ingalls, the Madison County Sheriff's Office and the Indiana State Police assisted in the arrests.
