National Lakeshore warns of Lake Michigan dangers

The National Park Service is reminding people who plan to head to the shores of Lake Michigan as the summer season begins that water conditions can change quickly from calm and inviting to rough and dangerous with little or no warning.

The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is reminding beachgoers to remember that north winds create dangerous conditions, saying steep, uneven waves have quickly overcome even experienced swimmers. Officials say the waves can easily knock people off sandbars into deeper water. They also say high waves are the number one cause of drowning in the park.

Breaking waves and whitecaps on the lake are an indication that it is too dangerous to swim.
