Bump Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway can take you to the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. For those who haven't qualified, Sunday was do or die. It was an emotional ride for one mother, filled with anxiety.
"Another day, like I need another day," said Beth Boles.
That about sums up Bump Day a second nail-biting day for drivers to accomplish what they couldn't on the first qualify for the Indy 500.
"I love you," said Beth.
Beth Boles is Conor Daly's mom and unquestionably his biggest-- and most nervous fan.
But, for Conor, there's no looking back. Car troubles during yesterday's qualifying rounds mean this rookie is driving for his life today. And Beth feels every bit of that pressure.
"Oh Jesus," whimpers Beth.
"C'mon Conor," she yells.
It's safe to say this mama might completely fall apart if it weren't for the support of a few veterans like long-time racing broadcaster, Jack Arute.
"Just take a deep breath, ok. It's going to be fine. You've seen this movie in black and white. He's in good hands and God's got him," said Jack.
But, with each passing lap--nerves overtake the senses.
"C'mom Conor," weeps Beth.
Carrie-Finally, a qualifying time Team Daly can live with.
"I didn't realize it would be that stressful," said Beth.
"You don't want him to crash, but it's like go faster. I can't even describe it," said Beth.
"Hey Sweetie! Good job honey! You scared me to death," said Beth.
"It was slow," said Conor.
"Yeah, that's alright," said Beth.
So, we've seen and experienced the highs and lows of Conor Daly's mother through qualifying. But, how does that anxiety affect the young driver?
"Since I'm in the car, I don't have to worry about it. I just feel bad for all the people watching with her because she gets quite excited," said Conor.
That may be the understatement of the day.
"We're not number one by the way," said Conor.
"I know, It's a thumbs up," said Beth.
