Pole Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway meant a lot more than just racing. This was a family affair with a little bit of something for everyone for non-stop entertainment.
The day's festivities started with royalty at the Breakfast at the Brickyard and the crowning of the 500 Festival Queen!
Allison Jacob won the coveted crown. She's a Junior at Ball State University majoring in Communications and Public Relations. She's also a hometown girl from Indianapolis, a 2010 graduate of Lawrence Central High School!
"I'm overwhelmed, It was so unexpected. I couldn't be happier to be surrounded by some of the most elite women in Indiana," said Jacob.
Outside, royalty of a different kind--Colts punter Pat McAfee traded in football training for military exercises at the Hero Zone in the infield.
Always the showman, McAfee taking a little time out to give back to the Wish for Our Heroes organization, which supports families of the armed forces.
"I've always had the utmost respect for our soldiers and military because they're our heroes," said McAfee.
But, this day wasn't all smooth sailing. Rain moved in and stayed awhile ending practice early and delaying qualifying rounds.
"I've got an early flight. So, I'm hoping to get some of it," said Larry Swantner, a race fan.
But, the rain delay made indoor events--like the live broadcasting of the Bob and Tom show a hot ticket!
But, eventually, the rain stopped and an army of track equipment moved in to dry things out.
Back to racing, qualifying rounds mean a lot of nerves here on pit row especially for the parents of the drivers.
"I find this to be as frightening as the 500 just because they're pushing to the max," said Beth Boles.
Boles is cheering for her son, the rookie, Conor Daly. His crash earlier in the week is a thought of the past. They're focused on the present and joining a brotherhood on Pole Day as they all Race to the Indy 500.
